It is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, a form of Goddess Sati, symbolising fertility and feminine power.

The temple has played a crucial role in Assam’s religious and political history, serving as a center of Tantric worship for centuries. 

According to legend, it was originally associated with Narakasura, while historically it was rebuilt by Koch king Viswa Singha, and later expanded by Naranarayana and Chilarai

The Nat Mandir (dance hall) was added during the Ahom rule under King Rajeshwar Singha.

A unique feature is that the temple does not house an idol, but a yoni-shaped stone, symbolizing the goddess.
